frida hartley shelter renovation

On 13 September 2025, the Temba Bavuma Foundation, in partnership with Betway Cares, proudly unveiled the newly renovated Frida Hartley Shelter for Women and Children. More than a physical upgrade, this milestone reflects a renewed commitment to dignity, safety, and opportunity. The project strengthens our advocacy for gender equality, ensuring vulnerable women and children have the security and support needed to rebuild their lives with hope and confidence.

Social Impact

Beyond education and sport, the Foundation is deeply committed to uplifting vulnerable communities through targeted social programmes. Guided by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, TBF focuses on poverty alleviation, health, education, and reducing inequalities.
Community Outreach:
Initiatives include blanket drives, stationery distributions, food parcel deliveries, and shoe donation campaigns. For example, in 2023, 250 pairs of sneakers were donated to pupils at Realogile High School, and 400 dignity packs were distributed to high school girls in Alexandra.
COVID-19 Relief:
During the pandemic, TBF distributed over 2,400 food parcels and 6,250 kilograms of maize meal to families in need, partnering with organizations like One People Fund and PPC.
Supporting Women & Children:
The Foundation has a long-term partnership with the Frida Hartley Shelter, empowering homeless women through education, skills development, and community food drives. In 2025, TBF and Betway Cares launched the renovated Shelter, restoring dignity and safety for vulnerable women and children.
Annual Drives & Celebrations:
From stationery drives to Christmas lunches, these initiatives embody TBF’s belief in community strength, dignity, and shared joy.

This focus area demonstrates TBF’s holistic approach to empowerment - meeting immediate needs while building long-term resilience and opportunity.

Cricket Development

Cricket is both the inspiration and cornerstone of the Foundation’s work. TBF leverages the sport not only as a platform for excellence but also as a vehicle for social transformation.
Grassroots Clinics:
Since 2022, cricket clinics in Soweto and Kagiso have provided structured training, fitness development, and mentorship for young players and local coaches.
Festivals & Competitions:
The Foundation organises annual youth cricket festivals, including the U15 Empowered Bavuma Festival (which now includes a girls’ division) and the U12 St David’s Festival. These events expand access, inclusivity, and competitive opportunities.
High-Performance Programme:
Looking ahead, TBF is launching a targeted programme to identify and nurture elite Black African batting talent from as early as age 12. This initiative aims to address underrepresentation at the highest levels of cricket by providing world-class coaching, conditioning, and international exposure.
Infrastructure Development:
In partnership with PPC, TBF has renovated cricket facilities at schools in Soweto, Kagiso, and Randburg, ensuring young cricketers have access to professional-standard facilities and equipment.
Through these initiatives, TBF is building a deliberate pipeline of opportunity, instilling discipline, teamwork, and resilience while promoting equitable representation in South African cricket.

Education & Scholarships

The Temba Bavuma Foundation places education at the heart of its mission, recognising it as the most powerful tool for breaking cycles of poverty and unlocking opportunity. Since its inception in 2016, TBF has worked to ensure that talented scholars from disadvantaged backgrounds gain access to quality education.
Scholarship Programmes:
Through partnerships with leading schools such as St. Stithians College, St. John’s College, St. David’s Marist Inanda, and Bishops Diocesan College, the Foundation secures scholarships that open doors for deserving learners.
Holistic Support:
Beyond financial aid, TBF provides mentorship and guidance, ensuring scholars are supported academically, socially, and emotionally.
Impact:
To date, nine scholarship recipients have been supported at partner schools, with three graduates progressing to the University of Pretoria.
This focus area reflects TBF’s commitment to building pathways for success and nurturing future leaders who can thrive both in the classroom and beyond.
